The Greek Ministry of Finance established in February 2024 a task force to provide its recommendations on the taxation of cryptocurrency in Greece. Suddenly, on the 2nd of August (by way of Decision published in the Government’s Gazette on the 8th of August), the Ministry repealed its decision for the establishment of a task force and abolished the task force. It should be noted that some members of this task force were replaced in April 2024.
Officially, the reasons behind this decision have not been communicated to the public. There are publications stating that the task force was abolished in order for the Ministry to broaden the scope of the task force and include the taxation of all crypto assets and not only the taxation of cryptocurrencies. Other publications support that the Ministry decided not to proceed, at least for the moment, with the establishment of a tax environment for the taxation of cryptocurrencies, as they are skeptical about cases where cryptocurrencies were used for money laundering.
One way or another this decision is a setback for the introduction of a tax framework for cryptocurrencies in Greece.
